Main causes of traffic congestion

Traffic congestion occurs daily in most cities and states with slower speeds, especially in the hours of traffic, longer transfer times and sometimes paralysis of traffic flow completely. These delays make drivers get stressed; they increase the risk of accidents and air pollution levels. According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA, for its acronym in English), there are some main causes of congestion.
Persistent causes
According to the FWHA, recurrent or persistent causes account for 45 percent of traffic congestion in the United States. Recurring causes are poor management of the signals, insufficient capacity vial and uncontrolled demand for roads. As a result, situations in which space to pass because of the large number of needs are given vehicles that exceed the actual or potential capacity. Usually, some of the measures to mitigate congestion by this cause include attempts to ask the drivers not to pass over the shoulders, raise taxes on vehicles and petrol and generalization of parking fees. On the other hand, it encourages local authorities to take measures to adjust frequency signals in the narrow intersections.
Incidents
The FHWA reports that non-recurring events such as accidents or abandoned cars, reduce the capacity of the streets and are the cause of 15 percent of traffic congestion in US Usually, accidents happen by carelessness of drivers, equipment failures or speed, which slows or stops traffic completely as a result.
Climate
The climate phenomena, including icing and lots of snowfall, can significantly reduce the capacity of the road and lead to congestion. In addition, drivers often drive more slowly or leave their vehicles in dangerous weather a condition, which further restricts the flow of traffic. However, during inclement weather, most drivers opt to leave the car at home or at work, which tends to reduce traffic. Therefore, according to the FHWA, extreme weather conditions represent only 15 percent of traffic congestion in the US
Street work
Although the work is blamed on the streets for traffic congestion, FHWA reports that only 10 percent because of traffic delays in US Ironically, the main objective of street work is the repair or improvement of these to reduce congestion in the future. At other times, work in the streets that make the utilities is to repair or install pipes and cables. Usually, when these works are done in the streets, lanes available are reduced, traffic slows traffic and there are periods stopped completely.
Other causes
Natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods and earthquakes are other less common but important causes of traffic congestion. Usually, when disaster strikes, the roads are lost or blocked while more drivers than usual trying to use them to evacuate the area in danger. Special events, such as concerts, parades and political rallies, can also cause congestion when police cordoned off streets.
